Vehicles with fuel injection systems have mass airflow (MAF) sensors, which measure the density and amount of air getting into the engine. A car's engine control unit (computer) uses the sensor's information to calculate how much fuel is required in the engine cylinders for effective combustion. Over time, accumulation of dust, debris, oil and pollen can cause the MAF sensor to send inaccurate readings to the computer, which in turn, affects the performance of a vehicle due to low air-to-fuel ratio.
